Over 30,000 feet – makeup does not exist
Going makeup free on any flight for me is always an absolute must, but I feel like for anyone travelling long haul it should be a complete no brainer. Your skin can easily become dehydrated due to the recycled air in the confined space of your cabin, not to mention all the bacteria flying around that can also play havoc with your skin! My personal advice would be to start the day makeup free, then you don’t have to worry about faffing around with taking it off in the airport or on the way. Either way I guarantee your skin will thank you for having zero makeup on by the time you step on that plane!

The key to not letting air travel screw with your skin too much is keeping hydrated – both inside & out! It can be so easy to drink next to no water when flying; I usually ask for my water to be topped up as often as possible, but have you noticed how tiny the cups are that they give you?!
I recently saw a tip from Zanna Van Dijk (one of my social media faves) about taking an empty reusable water bottle with you, so you can just ask to have your water topped up in that. This way you’ll be getting more than a shot of water each time you top up, plus you’re not having to use a disposable plastic cup! I will deffo be trying out this when I fly to Aus in a few weeks, I’ve just bought a Chilly’s 500ml bottle that’ll be a perfect addition to my hand luggage essentials (thanks to the gorge little shop Tom Loves in Howden for now stocking Chilly’s bottles!).
To keep my skin hydrated on the outside I LOVE using Tony Moly sheet face masks. Sheet face masks are the best to use in flight anyway as they are so easy to clear away after; but the Tony Moly ones are next level! My face feels amazingly hydrated after these babies. After that a little facial moisturiser top up with one of my all time, super versatile faves - Neals Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm; smells amazing & also gets used as a lip balm, cuticle balm and sometimes even foot balm when I’m on the go. It serves its purpose well as a multipurpose balm and never disappoints! Once the main pamper session is done, I use Neal’s Yard Remedies White Tea Facial Mist quite often during a flight… it’s perfect for a little refreshing boost, especially when I’m feeling a little tired & groggy. A spritz of this helps wake me up a little and of course keeps my skin hydrated.
Comfort is key!
As well as essentials for keeping my skin hydrated, I go all out to ensure I am comfy AF when flying. I always take my own soft blanket because the airline ones I’ve come across are stiff & not snuggly in the slightest. I have a fluffy one from Next that was a tenner – it takes up a fair bit of room in my hand luggage, but to me it is 100% worth it! I always pack fluffy socks, a fluffy neck pillow and this time I cannot wait to take my new addition, a Katie Loxton satin eye mask. I got it for Christmas & it feels heavenly!! I do not play when it comes to comfort when I travel; long haul flights especially are the perfect excuse to do nothing & enjoy it, so I always make sure to take full advantage of it!
Next on my list of essentials comes things like headphones, kindle, toothbrush & wipes!! Kindles are just the ideal lightweight way to take endless books on holiday, plus I have a version where the screen is still visible in sunlight for reading all day errday, it is one of my fave purchases ever. I love to read, but only really do it on holiday as I love to be able to binge read books in a few days, so long flights are perfect for this. Packing a toothbrush is just basic hygiene so I don’t really feel like that one needs explaining! The wipes though… wipes wipes wipes – I love wipes! At one point I had a wipe for every occasion packed in my hand luggage, now I try to use them as little as possible to be kinder to the environment; I think I’ll just be sticking to my biodegradable Mum&You wipes and instead of my usual antibacterial wipes, I might go for a hand gel & use it with tissues when I need to wipe anything down. Is that even any better?? I don’t actually know! In a few weeks’ time I am backpacking for an entire year (seriously how do you pack for that?!) and I’m not too sure how my extra ways of dealing with what I consider ‘travel essentials’ really work when trying to pack light… any tips you have for me please share!!
