Why Sustainability Matters

‘Sustainability’ is a word that you tend to see around a lot at the minute, especially commercially - it’s very on trend. So you might me wondering why it even matters... First, let’s make sure we all know exactly what the whole ‘sustainability’ thing is, then we can get onto exactly why it should mean so much to every single one of us.

Sustainability - the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level. When it comes to talking about the planet, sustainability is all about making sure that earth and all of its resources last as long as possible, for both us and future generations. Basically, it’s about important as something can get because if we can’t maintain the planet, literally nothing else matters.

I saw a quote once which said something like ‘if you think taking care of the environment doesn’t matter, try holding your breath whilst counting your money’; with the recent Amazon fires, the ongoing Aussie bushfires and the current rate of deforestation (which are destroying areas that literally provide us with the oxygen that we breath) this statement is becoming more important than ever. So, when you see a brand or product with sustainability at its core, take notice, it matters.

Sustainability can also just be about being a good human being, which is definitely something I aim to be! How we as humans live our lives has an impact not only on the planet, but also on all the other creatures that we share it with. As a species we’ve made a real habit of putting our wants & needs before literally every other being that exists; so many of the beautiful animals we travel and pay to see and admire were calling earth home long before we even came close to existing, yet we are taking it from them more and more. Looking after the home that we share and considering the needs of our non-human friends can really help the planet to thrive!

The idea of sustainability in, for example fashion is all about slowing things down, reducing ‘fast fashion’ and making the system more ‘circular’. Reusing / recycling materials, making higher quality products and considering environmental impact in the production process can all contribute to a company / brand’s sustainability. The amount of money, water and other resources wasted in the production of fast fashion is insane; buy cheap, buy twice is usually the truth when it comes to fashion, which also means twice the water used, twice the environmental impact, double the cost to the planet.

So next time you need some new workout gear or a new bikini, why not take a look at the sustainable brands out there? There are some amazing finds, clothes that have been made from actual recycled plastic bottles! You can get something you love, that will probably look amazing, last longer and you can feel great knowing that you’ve been kinder to the planet, simply by treating yourself.
