Facial Oil

I used to avoid oils on my face for fear it would make it look / feel even more oily. But, for those of you who may not know, totally avoiding oils in skincare when you have oily skin can actually have the opposite effect. Starving your skin of all oils & using (sometimes harsher) oil free products may cause it to over compensate in an attempt to re-balance your skin & produce even oil more than before! The aim is to find an oil that works well with your skin to help naturally balance, hydrate & prevent your oil glands from becoming overactive; this is different for everyone, even someone with the same skin type as you, may react differently to different facial oils. Once I learnt all this, I was eager to try some oils for myself!

Before I was introduced to the wonderful world of Neal’s Yard Remedies, I didn’t really know much at all about facial oil, but once I had been introduced to Neal’s Yard Remedies Rehydrating Rose Facial oil, I LOVED it; not only did it smell gorge, it felt like a real luxurious addition to my daily routine.

However, as much as I love skincare, I also like to be savvy, and the thought that I was maybe purchasing a product that I didn’t really need (when I already used moisturiser) lead me to the decision to cut oil out of my routine for a while & document the process. So below is a little snippet of the diary I kept, to see how much of a difference facial oil really made to my skin:

DAY 4 Skin doesn’t feel quite as soft, unsure if this is due to not using the facial oil or inconsistent water consumption / diet. I will focus on keeping hydrated & eating a balanced diet, to see how that affects my skin.

DAY 14 Face feels a little tighter, skin tone looks a little more uneven. My skin still feels relatively smooth & kind of soft.

DAY 21 Little pimply spots that I occasionally get don’t seem to heal as quick as when I use the oil. Skin is still smooth & soft, but nothing compared to how soft it was when I was using oil and moisturiser together. (then it was AMAZINGLY soft) I’ve also started to notice; my skin looks nowhere near as radiant.

After about 28 days, my mind was made up… facial oil is 100% worth the investment & really does make a difference to my skin. For me the combination of facial oil & moisturiser is a winning one for me; plus, it really doesn’t have to cost the earth… when used correctly you need very little facial oil for one application & the use of facial oil means you also need very little moisturiser!

When applying my facial oil I put 3-4 drops into the palm of my hand, rub my hands together to distribute it evenly before gently pressing onto the face (remembering to take care around the delicate eye area). After this I only need about a pea sized amount of moisturiser to complete my skincare routine.

There are so many different oils out there, to suit all different kinds of skin, so if you haven’t tried one before I would 100% recommend giving it a go & potentially upping your skincare game!
